Geese

You have probably heard someone talk about how a goose chased them when they were little, and maybe the goose even nipped them in the seat of their pants!

This happens quite a bit on the farm.   Usually the farmer lets the geese wander around the farmyard, because they eat insects and weeds and grass.  But they become very bossy and territorial!  They think they own the farm, and if someone comes too close to them, they spread their wings and start to run and chase that person.  They hiss when they do this, so it is very frightening!

Farmers keep geese for their meat and as "watch-dogs" for their property.  If someone drives into a farmer's yard, the geese will all start honking and squawking!

A male is a gander, a female is a goose, and the baby is a gosling. Here are two pictures of mother geese setting on their nest.   They are waiting to hatch their eggs.
