Llamas

Llamas are not natural to Alberta.  They have been imported and do well here in spite of our cold weather.  You may have noticed this Llama barn on Highway 2 north of Red Deer.

Llamas are curious creatures, and look at you with huge round eyes.  It looks like they are studying humans as much as we watch and study them.  Llamas are expensive to purchase, but many people keep them for their wool - which creates exotic knitwear.  They also make wonderful and intriguing pets.

We have a store near me that has the name Laughing Llama!  This store is on Wye Road, by Ardrossan, Alberta.  The former owners used to keep one or two llamas in a corral for people to visit.  It was great fun!

Owners bring llamas to the country fairs to show specialty breeds and particular grooming techniques.  As you can see from the pictures below, llamas have individual personalities as well as being different breeds.
