Pigs

Pigs have such a bad reputation for being messy, dirty, and sloppy!  Not all of that is true, but one thing is very true!   Pigs are stinky!  If you are driving down the highway, when a farmer is fertilizing his field by spreading pig manure, you will want to hold your breath until you get past!

Pigs eat grains, like oats or corn. But they also like vegetable leftovers, like potato peels or apple cores.

When pigs live together in pens, they like to walk around and visit each other talking in grunts. But once and awhile, a pig gets pushed or nudged and then you will hear a squeal sound. It is quite noisy in a pig barn.

The male pig is a boar, the female is a sow, and the baby is a piglet.

Farmers raise pigs for the meat, which is called pork.  There are lots of ways to get pork: pork chops, ribs, ham, roast, and bacon.

We have many stories and rhymes written about pigs, too.
